IIT JEE 2012: It's all about preparing the right way

With just few months to go for the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE), stress would be at all time high. It is time when students would be preparing and revising. They would also be taking numerous practice tests to ace the examination. However, students should work around the three golden rules- conceptual clarity, contextual familiarity and application expertise to crack the JEE 2012.

Let us go through some expert tips to score well. Remember don't panic and have faith in yourself.

10 Days before IIT JEE 2012

These ten days before the final examination are very crucial. It is time to prepare, practice and revise. Let us go through tips on how to revise and beat the stress during the last 10 days-:

1) Start concentrating on the topics that you have covered rather than wasting time on new topics.

2) Take many mock tests to see where you stand and your weak areas.

3) Revise all important concepts and formulae.

4) Scan all the topics in a stipulated time frame. If you still have some doubts, try to get them resolved as soon as possible.

5) Revise last year question papers. When you're taking them you must time yourself to gear up for the examination days.

6) Divide the total time into components based on total number of questions and your conceptual knowledge.

7) Eat, sleep well and relax yourself. You don't want to feel stressed out days before the exam.

1 Day before IIT JEE 2012

1) Take this time in revising topics that you have covered but are not very good in it.

2) Avoid doing new topics

3) Revise all formulas and short notes

4) Eat and sleep for at least eight hours before you go for the exam.

5) Pack all important stuff for the exam- admit card, pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners, all related stationary.

6) If you don't know the location of your test centre, try finding out the exact location so that you don't get lost on the d day. If your exam centre is in another city, you should reach a day before the exam.

On the day of IIT JEE 2012

1) Wake up early in morning.

2) Eat a light meal and have enough water.

3) You must reach the test centre on time. Reach at least 45 minutes before the test starts.

4) Check if you have the admit card and all necessary documents

5) Once you reach the centre and gave been given a seat to sit, you must synchronise your wristwatch with centre watch.

6) Once you get the paper, read the instructions carefully.

7) Fill your details clearly and with pencil only.

8) Give all three subjects equal time - 50 minutes each

9) If you want to do some rough work, use the space allotted to you.

10) You must attempt those questions whose answers you're 100% sure.

11) Be cautious about negative marking

12) Avoid wasting time on questions that you're not familiar with.

13) Use the diagram or value of constants given in the paper in solving a numerical. If the value is not mentioned, use the one you remember

14) Keep some time to revise your paper

15) If you don't know the answers, avoid getting panicked.

Goodbye IIT-JEE; 1 test from 2013

The government will scrap all engineering entrance exams from 2013-14. It has also come up with a novel idea of hiking tuition fees: students will not feel the pinch during the course of study, but they will have to pay up once they get a job.

Currently, various state boards and institutions, including the IITs, conduct at least 150 entrance exams every year. The government decided to dump all such exams, including the IIT-JEE and the AIEEE, at a meeting of IIT Council (IIT directors) and officials from the ministry of human resource development (HRD). Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal chaired the meeting.

“There will be one merit list. Institutes, including the IITs, will have to pick up students from this list,” Sibal said. “The list will be based on Std 12 marks and the entrance test results. Also, students will be counselled before they choose a course.” This test will be similar to the common entrance exam for medical courses beginning next year.

While rejecting the report of the Anil Kakodkar Committee that had suggested a five-fold fee hike for IITs (BTech and MTech programmes), the government, in principle, approved a fee hike. Sibal said students would continue paying Rs50,000 as annual fee, but they would have to “pay back” the difference money — the fee paid by a student and the money spent on him by an IIT — once they get a job.

Those from the SC/ST and OBC categories and students going for higher education or joining an IIT faculty would be exempted from this policy. The exemption would encourage students to take up research work and meet the faculty shortage, Sibal said.

“At present, the fees are nominal because of government subsidy,” he said. “The actual cost works out to nearly Rs6-8 lakh per student. Students can surely pay back this amount in easy instalments, considering the plush jobs they land with once they get their degrees.”

But the government wants a foolproof system in place to ensure students pay back the difference money. The degrees, which will soon be in a DMAT format, will reflect the difference money as loan and employers will be asked to deduct it from a student’s salary and deposit it with the government.

The government knows that several states might oppose its plan of a common entrance test for engineering courses because a large chunk of engineering colleges comes under state purview.

But it is confident of having the support of state governments because of the Supreme Court order in favour of a common entrance exam for medical courses. Sibal said that the Centre would discuss the matter with all state education ministers and representatives of all state boards.

TIME MANAGEMENT FOR IIT JEE

A very crucial issue facing JEE aspirants like you is the problem of time management. We’ve heard all sorts of remarks and queries from students claiming that lack of time management is becoming their nemesis:

"How many hours should I study everyday?"

"I cannot handle JEE preparation along with my Boards preparation"

"I feel very sleepy while studying!"

"How did you manage your studies during your preparation time?"

"I am very distracted with things like my iPod and spending time on Facebook."

"Should I spend time on things other than studies? Like sports or cultural activities?"

We are sure you can identify with some of these issues.

So what is that secret to great time management? What is that magic potion that will do away with every distraction that hinders your progress? How can you ensure the most effective management of your efforts?

The truth is that there’s no single formula or methodology applicable to everyone for effective time management. Each individual is unique. Therefore, everyone cannot be fit into a single success formula of exam .

You must figure out your own schedule that optimizes your time spent on studies while still giving you ample time to have fun. We would strongly discourage you from abandoning all extra-curricular activities and "focusing" only on studies. This is what you must have been advised to do by peers and elders. This strategy does not always work. What we would suggest is a balanced mix of studies as well as other things that you like doing, like playing soccer or listening to music, or spending time on the internet.

Here are some general pointers that you could use to draw up your own time-table:

— Studies should be your first priority, but not the only thing that you do. You must fit in other interesting activities in you schedule, things that you like doing.

— Figure out the time of the day that best suits you for studying. For some, it is early morning while for many others, it is late nights. Once you’ve determined when is the best time for you to study, construct your study schedule around that time of the day.

— There is no particular number of hours that you must put in everyday for studying. But one very important thing is to be regular and consistently follow your daily time-table. Also, make sure that you revise and practice regularly. For example, suppose that you are able to put in 4 hours of study everyday. You could possibly use 2 of those 4 hours for advancing along your (unfinished) syllabus and the other 2 for revising parts of what you’ve already covered up to that particular day.

— You must follow a balanced schedule with respect to all the three subjects. Studying only physics for days at a stretch, for example, is not a very good idea (although it might be fun; we did it ourselves too, but of course there are negative consequences). We would suggest touching upon at least two subjects everyday, and never neglecting any particular subject (its chemistry most of the times!) for more than 2-3 days. This way, you’ll be in touch with all the three subjects at any given point in time. Remember, if your aim is to maximize your rank JEE 2012, you must go in with your arsenal fully loaded, which means being very good in all the three subjects.

— Finally, if you are ever getting bored of studying, there’s no point continuing. Take a break for a while and then try to start afresh. But this does not mean studying for 5 minutes and taking a break of 55 minutes every hour!

Breath inhale & exhale slowly by counting to six to eight times, repart this excercise many times if possible and slowly and gradually. Finish this practice by inhaling, holding & exhaling deep breath . this practice is called measuring breathing excercise.

Hong-sau technique of meditation , it’s a simple breathing technique never try to control your breath, let it flow in normal manner in & out and do not try to hold it. In begining our body will be in a physical manner of awareness and you will feel your chest & diaphragm expand & contract but sooner or later you will realise it flows through nostrils calmly . in this your eyes must be closed and your concenteration will be in middle of forehead in between of eyebrows, you wil realize this fact, the flow of breath is between the spritual eye of forehead. Donot allow the movement of eyes otherwise the concentration will be disturbed. Finish this practice through nose by exhaling thrice from the mouth.

Progressive muscle relaxation technique is most effectively n widely accepted strategy to get way from the stress. Just take few minutes to relax by making yourself comfortable in loose fitted clothing. Try to inhale & exhale deep breaths slowly n gradually. Shift your attention to right foot by making muscles tense and tightly sqeezing it & try to hold for few counts and after that try to relax the muscles. You will feel your foot will become loose & limp. Same procedure is repeated for left foot.

Memorizing subjects is very difficult for every student and they eventually falls into boring method of reading books and retaining them. So fresh mind of learning is required , meditation is only way to improve studies and score good marks, - an average student can turn into bright future of nation .

The bottom line is never try shortcut road to conquer the exams , mediation is best way to improve your positive energy , brings clarity in thought along with creativity level which helps to visualize things in right perspective & silence inside helps in contemplation , it helps you to plan your studies and simultaneously it will boost your confidence which will become your ultimate weapon to fight exam stress.

I have seen many people asking about the good books for JEE. This is not my personal suggestion but also the suggestion of many students, teachers and IITIANS also. This is for them. So please don’t waste your time in searching for good books as I did.

Maths: ML Khanna, TMH and if u still have time try Arihant

Many people think ML Khanna sucks lot of time but according to me it clears the basics and also key to solve different kinds of probs. But don’t look at solutions before giving a try.Even RD Sharma works, but I suggest ML Khanna

Physics: HC Verma, Arihant (D.C.Pandey)

HCV is the best. Solve all the problems twice then try Arihant

Chemistry: P Bahadur for Physical chemistry

Arihant for Organic

Read NCERT then if you have time read from O.P.Tandon for Inorganic

Besides this you do from your coaching institute material (prefer BT material).At final revision do YG File (if u have), last year IIT problems or Arihant new pattern.. Then take test series (take BT not FIIT JEE seriously as it is beyond JEE level and de motivates u a lot)

February: For your boards’ preparation

March: As soon as your exams get over, collect all the test papers (your institute’s) and last year IIT problems of above chaps.

April: Revise thoroughly your Notes and don’t read anything new. Don’t read anything 4 days before the big day to relieve you from tension. Be confident and cool

For 12th Pass : Read thermodynamics,Mechanics,Vectors &3D Geometry,Differential Equations,Solutions,Carbohydrates in February and March. But i suggest to try problems on the chapters you know than studying new chapters.

This plan is very possible if you study hard with full dedication and determination. Can’t u lose your enjoyment for 6 months for a good life?

IIT JEE 2012 Eligiblity Criteria

Candidates must make sure that they satisfy all the eligibility conditions given below for appearing in JEE-2012

Date of Birth

The date of birth of candidates belonging to GE, OBC and DS categories should be on or after October 1,1987. Whereas the date of birth of those belonging to SC, ST and PD categories should be on or after October 1,1982. The date of birth as recorded in the high school/first Board/ Pre-University certificate will be accepted. If the certificate does not mention the date of birth, a candidate must submit along with the application, an authenticated document indicating the date of birth.

Year of passing Qualifying Examination (QE)

A candidate must have passed the QE for the first time, after October 1, 2010 or in the year 2011 or will be appearing in 2012. Those who are going to appear in the QE later than October are not eligible to apply for JEE-2012.

The qualifying examinations (QE) are listed below:
1) The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized central / state Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi; etc.

2) Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board / University.

3) Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.

4) General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.

5) High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.

6) Any Public School/Board/University examination in India or in any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

7) H.S.C. vocational examination.

8) Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.

9) 3 or 4 year Diploma recognized by AICTE or a state Board of technical education. In case the relevant qualifying examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level.

Minimum Percentage of Marks in QE

Candidates belonging to GE, OBC and DS categories must secure at least 60% marks in aggregate in their QE. Whereas, those belonging to SC, ST and PD categories must secure at least 55% marks in aggregate in the QE.

The percentage of marks awarded by the Board will be treated as final. If the Board does not award the percentage of marks, it will be calculated based on the marks obtained in all subjects listed in the mark sheet. If any Board awards only letter grades without providing an equivalent percentage of marks on the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying the equivalent marks, and submit it at the time of counselling/ admission. In case such a certificate is not provided then the final decision rests with the Joint Implementation Committee of IIt JEE-2012.

How to Apply for IIT JEE 2012 Joint Entrance Examination ?

Application procedure: A candidate can submit application either on-line through internet or off-line through prescribed (OMR) application form.

(a) On-line: For on-line submission of applications, visit any of the websites given below and carefully follow the instructions given therein. The students can pay the application fee through credit and debit cards of major banks or through challan of selected banks. The reduced examination fee for on-line mode is Rs. 450/- for SC/ST/PD/female candidates and Rs. 900/- for all other candidates.

(b) Off-line: A candidate can buy an application form with Information Brochure from any one of the designated branches of banks by paying Rs. 500/- for SC/ST/PD/Female candidates (light green envelope) or Rs. 1000/- for all other candidates (light blue envelope). This includes the examination fees. The information brochure contains details regarding application procedure, syllabus of JEE, examination centres, and courses available at various institutions, counseling, fee structure and other relevant information about JEE-2012.

(c) Help-line (only in IIT Madras zone): Those who do not have access to computers and internet can also apply on-line with reduced examination fees by visiting any of the forty approved ‘CMC help-line’ centres distributed all over the IIT Madras zone. IIT JEE Exam Pattern

There will be two question papers, each of three hours duration. Both the question papers will consist of three separate sections on Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

Questions in these papers will be of objective type. The answers for each of the questions are to be recorded on a separate specially designed machine-gradable sheet of paper (ORS-Optical Response Sheet). While answering each of the questions the candidate is expected to darken the bubble against correct answer(s) using hard black (HB) pencils only. In some sections, incorrect answers may be awarded negative marks.

AHMEDABAD: The Joint Admission Committee for Professional Courses (JACPC) on Friday declared the provisional merit list for admissions in the engineering and pharmacy degree courses. Student ranking first in the merit list for engineering courses has a score of 97.57 per cent. The merit list is prepared considering marks scored by students in HSC (science) and Gujarat Common Entrance Test (Gujcet) in the ratio of 60:40. Significantly, the merit list of students of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has not been finalized as the students have not yet got the marksheets. "We have extended the date till which the CBSE students can submit the marksheets to June 6. We are hopeful that the merit list will be prepared as the marksheets should be in by then", committee member MN Patel said. The officials said that there are 40,366 students of the A group and 47,140 students of B group have so far completed online registration for the admission in engineering and pharmacy courses. The committee will upload information about the details of the availability of seats in different colleges all over the state by 2 pm on Saturday. After this, the students will be able to fill the choice online.

Gujarat medical admission 2011 procedure to start from May 23

Admission process for various medical courses will begin from May 23. The Admission Committee for Professional Medical Educational Courses at B.J Medical College, Ahmedabad will look after the management of admission process.

Giving details of the programme, Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas today said that aspiring students should have to fill and submit their enrollment forms during May 27 to June 10, 2011. Merit list will be declared on June 25, while first counseling will be held during July 5 to July 20.

Health Minister informed that students, who have cleared the recent exams of class-12 in ‘B’ or ‘AB’ group and who have appeared for GUJCET exam and seek admissions on government seats of grant-in-aid, government and self-finance colleges, can get enrollment forms during May 23 to June 6, from the branches of Axis bank.

Students are particularly asked to come in person to B.J medical college with the necessary documents like fully filled up enrollment forms, copies of mark sheet and certificates and else. Applications send via courier or mail will not be accepted.

Black-marketing of AIEEE forms, panic among students

All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) is scheduled on 1st May, 2011. Every year a large number of students participate in this exam. This exam is gateway for prestigious engineering colleges of the country. There are limited seats in all engineering colleges across the country and thousands of students participate in this exam. All aspiring students want to secure a seat in one of the renowned colleges; this increases the level of competition among students. As this is one of the most sought after exam, students do not want to miss even a single opportunity to secure a seat in these colleges.

Black-marketing of AIEEE forms put students and their parents in state of fix. Bookshop owners are selling these forms for higher price. They are selling this exam from for Rs. 800 to Rs. 900, which is much higher as compared to the actual printed price on the forms. For example, a general category form is sold for Rs 600, but it is being sold at a price of Rs. 850.

Most of the students are aware of the fact that booksellers are cheating them and charging a higher amount, but they do not have any other option. Most of the students are unable to fill the form online, as they do not have a credit card to make online payment. And those who have it can not download form because of the heavy traffic on the website. AIEEE authorities have joined hands with Syndicate Bank for the sale of forms.
But, the official informed that forms are not available as these have been sold.

Prateek Bhadauria, a student of Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology who wants to participate in AIEEE entrance exam, said, “Though the human resource and development ministry has decided the form price, booksellers are fleecing people by selling it at a higher rate. Booksellers say they have a monopoly… so, those wanting to purchase these are paying more." Rishab Dadu, another student of Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, said, “It has burned a hole in my pocket. The authorities concerned should act, else these booksellers will continue to cheat us.”

Pawanjot, a student of DAV School, Chandigarh, said he dropped a year to prepare for AIEEE examination. “But when Syndicate Bank authorities said they did not have a form, I had no option other than buying it at a
hiked price from local booksellers.”

This hiked price of the forms has increased the panic among the students. They have to pay extra amount for the from, as they do not have any other option rather than buying it from the booksellers. AIEEE authorities should take some measures to control this situation and to combat the black-marketing of forms

AFMS or AIEEE what to choose?

A large number of students across the country appear in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination 2011 and Armed Forces Medical Colleges. This year a large number of students would surely miss one exam. This year both the exams will be held on the same day, which are scheduled on 1st May, 2011. While AIEEE will be conducted between 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, and AFMCwill begin from 9:30 AM and end at 11:30 AM on 1st May, 2011.

The candidates are in lurch and unable to decide what to choose, as both the exams are important for them. A student, Manoj Kumar said: “I have not been able to concentrate on either of them. Every year, the AIEEE was conducted during the last week of April. The sudden change is giving students, who wish to appear in both the examinations, a tough time. I hope that the authorities listen to us and come up with some solution.” Manoj passed his senior secondary examination last year and having both mathematics and biology as his subjects. He, therefore, wants to play safe and applied for both engineering and medical examinations.
Even the parents are equally worried about the clash of dates. Subedar Major TR Singh, father of Manoj, said, “It’s a question of future of the students. My child has been depressed over quite some time pondering as to what he should do. I request the higher authorities to look into the matter and help the students.”

This clash of exam date will affect a large number of students this year. Many students will miss one exam as both the exams are scheduled on the same day. Students are in tizzy state of mind as both the exams are important for them and this year they are going to miss one due to the lack of coordination among the examination bodies. A similar kind of problem has occurred earlier too; parents and aspiring candidates raised their voice to change the timing of the examination. After this issue the examination bodies decided to change the timing of the exam which gives them big. So the same kind of things can be done this year too to give relief to students and their parents

AIEEE is one of the reputed engineering exams of the country. The exam was first time conducted in the year 2001. In last ten years this exam has turned up as one of the prestigious engineering entrance exam of the country. All the aspiring candidates who want to secure a seat in one of the top IITs or NITs must take this test. The pattern of the exam is objective type. The exam is divided into two different section for BE/B. Tech courses and for B.Arch/B. Planning courses. Some of the important aspects of preparing for the exam involve the following points:

There are number of sites available who offers free online test, one can visit those sites and practice their online papers to enhance their knowledge, accuracy and speed. But it is really important to find the right kind of the site to practice.

Time is really an important factor in this exam. It is really important to divide your time well for each question and section, while preparing for the exam. Consult the solution, only when you have tried enough to solve the particular problem and have exhausted your limits. Try to find out what step you have missed while solving the problem.

AIEEE & JEE Topper shares his Success Mantra!

"Practice makes a man perfect." . This is the one golden rule that I have followed throughout my preparations forIIT-JEE as well as all other competitive exams like AIEEE. So, my dear readers, here I am to share some of my experiences and to give you some advice on how to prepare for these deadly entrance exams.

One dilemma that I face when I write an article on such a topic is where to start from. So, let me start from the beginning. Born on 29th November, 1991, I was declared by doctors as a child who could possibly be mentally retarded in the future (seems weird, ain't it? Read on…). I believe it has only been the strength of mind and the determination of my parents and one of my teachers that has brought me up to this level, sort of reversing the doctors' prophecy. I still remember when I was in primary school, I was quite shy, but then I started participating in a lot of competitions, often emerging on top. Those things gave me a lot of confidence and I slowly started rising up and opening myself to this world. People believe that these high ranks are meant for 'born-geniuses'. But that is far from the truth. In my case at least, I was born an anti-genius. So, it's mostly about practice, starting early, using your time to the utmost. Edison rightly said "Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration."

It was only in class VI that I got my first go at a national level science competition (the NSO) and obtained anAIR 13. Then, in class VII, I finished East Zone runner-up in the India's Child Genius quiz conducted by Siddhartha Basu, missing an opportunity to meet Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam by just 0.2 seconds in the buzzer round. I have never looked back since then, always learning from my mistakes and practicing endlessly in order to attain that ever-elusive state of perfection.

Now, having built up a sort of prologue let me come to the major issue: IIT- JEE. These three letters seem to weigh so heavily on the minds of so many youngsters. Here, I will be basically discussing how to plan out your preparations so that this exam looks a bit easier. Having interacted with lots of students from all over India through live seminars, Gmail, Facebook, etc. and most importantly, having been through that crucial stage myself, I am well aware of the questions that JEE aspirants have in mind. So, I will be going through the rest of this article in a sort of your question-my reply format.

First and foremost, the first question that always turns up is "What is your success mantra?" I would say it's utilizing even that tiny moment for self-study which you are giving to pondering over this question. According to me, it is time-management along with some self-belief. Every single moment that you are wasting in some not-so-important activity, thousands of other competitors are striving hard to get ahead of you. So, you simply cannot afford to waste time. A bit of relaxation here and there after some continuous study is a must, but you should be able to contain that "I have had enough" feeling.

People also ask me when exactly did I start my JEE preparations. Now, I am not very clear about the question itself. I started studying the JEE syllabus topics in the middle of class X, but I had started concentrating on science-maths and strengthening my basics from class VI itself. I had joined a JEE-directed correspondence course for the first time in class IX while I had my first major confidence booster at the India's Child Genius in class VII. So, it's been quite a long journey with a beginning which I myself am unable to figure out.

Then, why did I join FIITJEE and not any other coaching institute. Every student has his own capabilities and requirements. I knew that given sufficient time for self-study, I could understand concepts well on my own, but I needed some good teachers who could clear my doubts. That's where FIITJEE came into the picture and they filled the void extremely well, better than I had ever imagined. Enrolled into the PINNACLE program, I used to get the entire evenings free as all classes would be over by 2:30 pm in the school campus itself. So, I had lots of time with me and I would sit down, think, solve, practice, get my doubts cleared the next day, etc.

This last point I just mentioned: Doubt Clearance is one thing I have seen missing in most aspirants' priority lists. As a student, you ought to have faith in your teachers and approach them with your doubts. I have seen colleagues who never even asked their school teachers any doubts. You need to try them out first, if they are unable to satisfy your query, only then should you go to external tuitions. They are the teachers because they know things better than you do. Many students feel that a good teacher is the one who explains things well and solves questions on the board. I would say a good teacher is one who clears your doubts well. That's because you can do the understanding and solving part yourself too but those inevitable doubts here and there require a strong tutor.

Coming to my next point: Time Management, students keep fretting about this simple concept. I have seen students in my city who spend evenings performing stunts on bikes, eating out with friends (mostly girlfriends), watching movies, etc. and then let out a cry on the JEE day, "Why do these guys such unsolvable papers?" As you can very well see, they haven't been true to themselves and hence can't expect to get into IITs, NITs, etc. in place of those who have burnt the midnight oil. I myself have given everything to it during the past 2 years and am definitely reaping rich rewards. It's better to utilize pre-JEE time and then enjoy life in IITs (I must tell you it's a beautiful place to be in) rather than wasting it and regretting later.

I will give you an example. All of us get this 1.5 to 2 month gap after the class X exams. Instead of visiting places and enjoying yourself, you can give a week or so to refreshing yourself and then get back to studies in order to get a good headstart. This will enable you to understand concepts better when they are taught in class. Then, you can also utilize those small intervals during change of classes to solve some questions. People around you will laugh at you, try to derail you from that right track but you need to ignore them.

In the end, it doesn't even matter. I tried so hard, I got so far. They tried to derail me but inflicted losses upon themselves only.
It's not that I gave up everything for my preparations. I used to solve sudoku everyday, read the newspaper, played (although rarely), did a bit of social networking in the last few months but I wasn't obsessed with these things. I knew my goal and its importance in my life. You just need to prioritise your time-table.

Returning to academics, if you prepare well for JEE, you are almost done with your board exam PCM syllabus as well. And as I said earlier, if you choose your tuitions wisely, you will also be able to find ample time for English and the 5th subject. Many students go to particular tuitions just because their friends have joined it or because they have heard lots of people praising that teacher. This isn't the right way to do so. You need to understand your own requirements and choose accordingly. There might be a teacher who is very good at mechanics but doesn't teach electromagnetism well. You don't need to continue going to him just because you feel a sense of loyalty and gratitude towards him. It's your life, your career, you have to decide keeping in mind your own good. Then try to give more time to practicing questions of different varieties and from different books. I wouldn't recommend reading the same concept again and again from different sources/teachers as it would simply be a waste of your precious time. Instead grasp that concept from 1 or 2 books and then move on to practice.

Now I feel I should address the question on how to study in general? It's better to finish topics one by one. Doing 3 or 4 topics all at one time will make it quite difficult for you to handle everything. Two topics from different subjects is quite ok because if you feel bored after studying one of them for 5-6 hrs., you can switch to the other one and then return. Try to prepare compendiums for each topic as it will be helpful in the later stages of preparation. If you notice some trick in some book, note it down and revise it later so that you get an idea of where it works and how to apply it. Such tricks and option elimination prove very useful in saving time for the tougher questions.

Coming to books, here's a list of books that I covered during my JEE preparations:

Physics: Irodov (mechanics only), H C Verma, Arihant (all topics) Chemistry: R C Mukerjea, O P Tandon, Paula Bruice. Mathematics: Arihant (all topics except algebra), TMH (class XIth syllabus)

In addition, I completed all NCERT books, packages of FIITJEE as well as BRILLIANT and solved FIITJEE's GrandMasterPackage and RankersTestPaperFile. The latter two are very good for practice and revision in the last few months.

In class IX and X, I used to read books by Dinesh Publications (PCMB), H C Verma (physics), R D Sharma (maths) and correspondence courses from Brilliant Tutorials and BMA. I found these books by BMA to be very good and interesting.

The next pressing issue is how to prepare for all other exams that occur round the clock in these 2 years. I personally feel that NSO, IMO, NSTSE, etc., although considered easy by many, are very good exams to get an estimate of where you stand and of your strengths and weaknesses. Any national level exam, tough or easy, is competitive and as easy for you as for someone sitting in any other part of India. Then come the physics, chemistry, maths and astronomy olympiads. The maths olympiad requires a bit of extra preparation on topics like number theory, combinatorics, etc. The other three olympiads can be cracked if you have been thorough with the JEE syllabus. If you clear the first two levels, then you go to the camp at HBCSE, Mumbai where you need some experimental skills too. It's here that your presence (both mental and physical) in school labs plays an important role. Then you have KVPY in class XI which has no pre-defined syllabus. The paper basically tests your mental ability and clarity of concept. You need to have knowledge of topics that will be covered in class XIth and a bit of the formulae and laws from the early days of class XIIth. The interview is meant to test your confidence and clarity of aim in life.

I would be writing an incomplete article if I didn't talk about what to do during the last few months before JEE. So, I suggest you should complete all your syllabus at least by mid-December and then begin with revision of your class-notes and of the chapter-wise summaries you must have created in the two years. Then, move on to practicing question-papers of 6 hours duration. Solving questions from individual chapters is quite different from solving them when they are all thrown together at you. It might happen that you are able to solve mechanics alone very well but in exam time, the pressure created by being unable to solve optics may take you down in mechanics too. So, you need to have good practice of sitting own for 6 hours and handling that pressure. Utilise the board exams preparatory leave very well. I had given 15 days to JEE preparation and the rest to my Board exams. Then, I had an 11-day gap before my maths board exam. So, I didn't study CBSE level maths in February and also devoted 5 days out of 11 to JEE. You need to find time and plan very well. The 14 day gap between last board exam and JEE should go into revision and practice only. Do not try to read/learn something new in that period, it will just add to the pressure.

Another extremely important question that arises is: How to cope with the pressure? I would say: Just keep practicing, sit down for lots of national level tests, when you see that you are able to solve questions and getting some good ranks, you will gain confidence and it's this much required self-confidence that will help you sail through the JEE day. If you are unable to get those ranks, look at the mistakes you committed, discuss them with your teacher, try to correct them in the next paper, get your fundamentals cleared, and dedicate more time to that topic where you are prone to mistakes. It might take some time for that change to show up, but it will certainly happen over a period of time. You know, thousands of people (and almost everyone in Kota) wish to achieve a top 100 JEE rank but only those few who have stuck to their basics, who have been regular, who have practiced a lot and hence built up their speed and accuracy who achieve it. There's always this competition. You can't afford to give up or lose time.
